Brothers for life

X&J EMPIRE, NEW YORK. Xander groaned inwardly, dropping his pen in frustration. Working and concentrating seem more complicated than usual. He didn’t realize how much Jace’s presence impacted him until now. Their mother has always said that Jace is like their father whenever he avoids someone. He probably should have taken it seriously and not offended him. At the same time, apologizing doesn’t seem appropriate on his end. His ego is the problem if he has to be sincere. He sighed heavily and almost looked hopeful when the door opened to let someone in. Xander’s shoulder fell when it turned out to be Dawn. For a second, he hoped it would be Jace. “Hey, you,” Dawn mumbled with a big smile. He almost cringed at it. It’s been a while since they acted that friendly to each other. Not on his end, though. “Hi.” “I need you to sign these documents.” She said, placing the file on his table. “You could have sent someone to bring it or just handed it to Lisa,” Xander replied while opening the file. Dawn stared at him with a strange gaze settling in her eyes. “I just thought it wouldn’t be a bad idea to bring it myself. It’s been a moment since I stretched my legs.” She pulled out a chair and settled into it with the smile still plastered to her face. “So, how have you been? It’s been a long time since we last spoke. I miss telling you everything that I was up to over time.” Xander grunted in response and kept appending his signature. He wasn’t comfortable speaking to her yet. She huffed at his reaction. “Xander, I thought we were over this. Why are you still making it awkward between us? At least Nina has been put to bed and is fine. Why are you still making me bear the burden?” He glanced up at her with a blank look in his eyes. “Please, Dawn. Whatever is going on between us has nothing to do with Nina.” “How is it not? It all started when she arrived.” “No, who you are under the facade began to show. And that is what I find unsettling. Having someone I thought I knew over the years do something so cruel all in the name of love is what has me worried and concerned. If you still can’t see it that way, there is no need to keep having this discussion with you.” Dawn felt her toes curl in anger, but she kept her calm. “I am sorry, Xander. I will keep begging you. I am sorry.” “Alright. Here you go.” He mused, handing her the file. She took it as her cue to leave and stood up without a word. As soon as she left, Xander hurried out, walking toward Jace’s office. He knocked slightly on the door before opening it. “Do you have a minute?” Jace replied with his head buried in the files in front of him. “I have none to spare.” Xander grinned to himself, walking further in. “I take it that you have enough time on your hands.” He looked up with a frown. “I want to believe you do understand comprehensive English. I do not have time to talk to you. You are not blind, are you? As you can see, I am busy. And since when did the CEO have so much time on his hands to spare?” Xander sighed heavily. “You really won’t let go, would you? For crying out loud, Jace. It is almost a month.” “So? Does that change anything? I still don’t want to speak to you. It is my right, you know.” “Fine, if you don’t talk to me, I will tell you everything on my mind.” He stayed quiet, hoping Jace would show interest. Instead, he had his head buried in the file stubbornly. “Anyway, Dawn is being insistent on being friends with me again. I might be overstretching it, but I think it might be for the best. Also, Nina wants us to start afresh with our friendship and see where it will go. I am quite excited about it.” Jace paused to look at him this time. “Really?” That was the only thing he said. Xander groaned. “I know, Jace. And I am discussing it with Uncle Jason. I am going to keep to terms now. Can we stop this feud and get back to normal?” “Do you know the problem I have with you, Xander? This isn’t the first time you have made that promise. You have been saying it over and over again. I am beginning to think that you enjoy playing around with it. Please, man. I am not in the best of mood right now. Excuse me, please.” Seeing the conversation wouldn’t lead anywhere. Xander stood up and left. Jace waited patiently to be sure he was gone before he dialed his phone. The line connected immediately. “Is it true?” He inquired eagerly. Jason let out a slight cough on the other end. “Do you plan to give a shock, boy? Not even a hello from your end. What is it this time?” “Pardon me, uncle. I want to know if Xander has started his treatment this time.” “Yes, he hasn’t missed a session in the last two weeks.” A proud grin settled on Jace’s face. “Okay, that’s good to hear.” “So, will you get to talking to him now? He is miserable without you. You know he has no friend to call on.” “Well, I am glad he doesn’t. That would teach him to appreciate what he has. I don’t plan on ending it soon. It is nice to have him off my back for a while. I miss him too.” “You shouldn’t be saying all this to me; tell your brother.” “Hell no, I am not ending this until further notice. It’s not easy for me too. But if that would make him take his healing seriously, I will hold on longer. Thanks for the update, uncle. Bye.” “Jace?” “Yes, sir?” “Xander is lucky to have you as a brother. I know none of this is easy for you, but I am sure it will turn out well. On behalf of everyone, I am saying thank you for being so amazing. It’s blissful to have someone like you in one life. I am most proud of you. Bye, son.” Jace eyes watered when the call ended. Xander is the only sibling and true friend in his life. Wouldn’t it be a loss on his end if his only brother becomes a shadow of himself? Inhaling sharply, he hummed to himself and returned to work. At least he isn’t depriving himself of anything. The method is working just fine.
