Chapter 1820
Felix stood before her, leaning in slowly, his hand reaching out to brush a stray lock of hair from her face.
"She’ll be cooped up for the next two months," he said. Seemed like this was the way how he handled it.
Carol couldn't help but chuckle. Wasn't this just another way of protecting Listina? After all, she had just been through the wringer with Maja. If Listina kept making waves, Maja’s people were bound to not let her off the hook.
So, she had to be tucked away, safe from the possibility of rubbing someone the wrong way and getting another slap.
Carol didn't bother arguing. She simply continued scrolling through her phone. She texted Nathan.
[Craving shrimp, the jumbo kind.]
Nathan was always quick to reply. To Carol, it was a game of sorts, sending him messages even during her restless late-night hours.
But no matter the time, Nathan was always prompt with his response.
Carol almost believed he was just sitting there, waiting for her texts without ever blinking. Still, she couldn't shake the playful intent; this guy was no different from Felix, each with their own agenda.
[I'll pick some up. How about I also make a roast chicken to help you recharge? When will you be over?]
[Leaving now.]
After sending the message, she stood up, tossed her phone into her purse, and headed for the door with it.
Felix's grip on her wrist stopped her, "Where to?"
"Hanging out with Maja." Content held by NôvelDrama.Org.
Hearing this, he loosened his grip, his eyelashes fluttering downwards, "I'll have the chef whip up something to build your strength."
"No need; I'll eat there."
Felix didn't let go of her wrist, instead, he drew closer, wrapping his arms around her waist. Carol's heart skipped a beat. She frowned, listening as he said, "I know you're upset."
"It's a misunderstanding, Mr. Brown."
His hands remained around her waist, still not intending to let go. Carol shifted, "I'm meeting her for dinner; let go."
He let her go, and then after a moment's thought, he asked, "Who do you want to invite to the wedding?"
He didn't have many relatives or friends, so it was up to Carol to decide on the guest list.
"Let's not. I don't want too many people in on this."
Her words visibly darkened his expression. He didn't respond, and just stared at her with a heavy gaze.
Carol didn't care to witness his reaction; she simply opened the door and left.
Opting to drive herself to avoid her chauffeur reporting back to Felix, she arrived at Nathan's new place. Stepping out of the car, she saw Nathan waiting outside.
"Ms. Miller!"
She rolled down the window and got out, "Park the car for me."
"Sure thing."
After he skillfully parked the car, Nathan opened the door for her. The house was warm, so she removed her scarf and noticed Fiona doing her homework nearby.
Without initiating a greeting, Carol caught the scent of cooking from the kitchen; Nathan must be preparing the meal.
Fiona looked up, her eyes shyly meeting Carol's, "Carol."
She nodded, hearing Fiona's excitement, "Nathan bought the biggest shrimp today."
Her eyes sparkled, and then she quickly returned her gaze to her homework, "Lately, we've had so many delicious things. Life seems so much better."
And Fiona's better life was seemingly at the expense of Carol's downturn. But Carol didn't see the point in being petty with a child, "Make sure you eat plenty tonight. Your brother also bought chicken?"
"Yes, he's making chicken soup. It's really good."
Nathan didn't join in their conversation. He brought Carol a cup of herbal tea for beauty, and then shut the kitchen door behind him to continue cooking.
His new house wasn't large, over one hundred square meters, but compared to his old place in the alley, it was practically a mansion.
Carol sipped her tea and flipped on the TV to watch a variety show. Fiona wheeled closer to join her.
After a while, Fiona asked, "Are you Nathan's girlfriend?"
Carol raised an eyebrow, unsure how to answer the question.
"Who's been saying that?"
"No one. He told me not to ask, and not to mention you around Felix."
As Carol heard this, her lips curved, the affair suddenly tasting a tad richer.
"Have you mentioned it?"
"No. The day we were moving, Felix came to help. He only stayed an hour, took some stuff, and gave me a card. He seems busy lately, not visiting much. I heard he's getting married, but I don't know which pretty lady it is."
"He told you he's getting married?"
"Yeah, he seemed happy about it."
Carol thought to herself, with that poker face of his, Fiona could decipher happiness? Quite a feat.
He was probably just placating the kid; after all, some ugly truths shouldn't be laid bare to the innocent.
"Felix is probably marrying Listina; he's waited years, and now they're finally together."
As Fiona spoke, she picked up an orange from the coffee table.
"It's so enviable. Felix is such a catch; marrying him would surely be blissful."
"Do you think he's that great?"
"Yeah, super great. He always brings me gifts, helped me with homework, and stood up for me when I was bullied."
Carol peeled the orange for her, not continuing the topic. But Fiona wasn't wrong; Felix had always been good to Listina.
