Chapter 34
Maybelline Walter POV
Miles made breakfast before I woke up, and we ate together.
‘Can I take the day off? Lily said she’ll be coming over later, so I want to hang out with her’ I had told Miles earlier while we were having breakfast together, and he gave me his permission.
After he left the office, I quickly went to my room and took my time to bathe. And after I was done, I got dressed and waited for Lily to come and pick me up.
My phone started to ring as I descended the staircase minutes later, and I swiped the answer button when I saw that it was her.
“I’m outside your gate. Don’t keep me waiting,” Her voice sounded from the other end, and I rolled my eyes.
“What if I tell you that I’m not ready yet?” I smirked, and I heard her scoff.
“You wouldn’t dare,”
“Whatever! I’ll be there in two,” The call disconnected afterward, and since I was all ready, I left the house.NôvelDrama.Org holds © this.
“I’ve missed you so much, my love. I thought I was going to die if I didn’t see you,” She whined as she ran into my arms as soon as I stepped out of the gate.
“Are you going to choke life out of me?” She quickly pulled away from me and smiled.
“Of course, not. I don’t want to hurt my baby in there,” She hurried over to me again and rubbed her hand gently on my stomach.
“Is it kicking already?” She leaned forward and whispered as if she didn’t want someone to hear about it.
“The baby is just one month old for crying out loud, Lily,” I reminded her, and she huffed.
“I can’t wait to have him in my arms. Gosh! I really can’t wait,” She squeaked excitedly, and I rolled my eyes. Well, she wasn’t excited and anxious more than me though.
“You are not planning to keep me here forever, are you?” I crossed my arms on my chest.
“Forgive my manners, my queen. This way,” She quickly pulled the car door open for me, and I shook my head unbelievably as I hopped inside the car. Why are you so dramatic?
“So, where should we go first? Restaurant, park, or…”
“Restaurant is out of it. I just had breakfast,” I replied to her as I fastened my seatbelt.
“Let’s go to the cinema then. I heard there is a new Korean movie that’ll be played there today,” I rolled my eyes.
“Let’s just go to the park,”
“Alright then,” She finally started the car, and the ride began.
I could barely concentrate on our way even as Lily kept talking. My thought was on what happened between me and Miles yesterday.
“Are you ok? You look… distracted,” Lily’s voice disrupted my thoughts, and I looked at her.
“I’m disturbed about something, Lily,” My heart almost jumped out of my chest as she stepped on the brake and brought the car to an abrupt halt with a loud screeching sound.
“What was that? You startled me,” I held my chest and breathed out.
“It’s dangerous to talk while driving. What’s disturbing you? Did Miles do something to you? Is it about him?” She asked curiously, and I breathed out.
“It’s Miles. He keeps acting weird. Yesterday, he almost sacked two of his workers because they bullied me, and later when I got a text from Liam asking us to meet, he went all out and crazy. It’s disturbing,” I explained to her cluelessly, and her eyes narrowed as she cupped her cheeks in her palms.
“Are you for real? He freaked out because you were talking to Liam?” I blinked my eyes rapidly in confusion, wondering why she was being all dramatic.
“What’s there to be so dramatic about?” I rolled my eyes.
“Everything, girl. Don’t tell me you don’t know what’s happening,” She gasped, and I shrugged.
“What’s happening? He is just being crazy. I mean, we only got married on…”
“Don’t even go there, girl. Don’t remind me of that because, to me, he is my brother-in-law, and nothing else. I don’t care what your marriage is based on,” She cut me off, and I rolled my eyes.
“Wait… What! Liam texted you? What the fuck does that jerk? You didn’t tell him you got married? For goodness sake, he had all the chance back then but chose another woman, so what the fuck does he want now?” I thought Miles was driving me nuts with his weird behavior, but I guess I was mistaken. Lily was the real damned one here.
“Lily…”
“Why the fuck is he texting you? Ugh! That brat! I think I should…” She paused and huffed.
“Never mind. I will deal with it,” She waved her hand in the air dismissively.
“You all are unbelievable,”
“Whatever! Wait! Are you trying to pretend you don’t see what’s happening?” She cupped her cheeks in her palms again, and I scoffed.
“I don’t know,” I shrugged.
“Miles likes you. He has fucking fallen for you and you shouldn’t be so foolish not to see his feelings for you,” She said the most unrealistic thing I ever heard. How could she even come up with something like that? I mean, is that even possible? Miles is the last man to have feelings for me, and besides, he’s not even my type. I told myself, but my heart fluttered and I didn’t need anyone to tell me that I was lying to myself.
“Don’t be ridiculous, Lily,” I huffed nervously.
“I’m being serious right now, babe. The last time, he fired his secretary because she talked down on you, and yesterday, he almost did the same… He even got angry because you were talking to Liam. Are you that clueless?” She sank her fingers into her hair and emphasized the ‘clueless’.
“Forget it! It’s not possible,” I mumbled and turned my face away.
“Have you asked yourself why he married you? What if he secretly likes you, and…”
“Don’t go there, Lily. If he liked me, he would’ve just told me about it,” I rolled my eyes dismissively.
“Have you ever thought about what happened between you two in the past? What if he is pretending not to remember that night? What if he has a big crush on you and thought this is the only way to win…”
“Ugh! Just forget it. Let’s stop talking about it. Can we leave already?” I cut her off, and she stared at me for a few seconds before she finally started the car.
“You shouldn’t be too guarded, anyway,” She finally started the ride.
Does he really like me? Does he remember what happened that night? What if is really pretending not to remember? What reason would he have to do such a thing? Why did he marry me? I kept asking myself, and the latter was even more confusing considering he never gave me a good reason for getting married to me.
“Forget it! It’s not possible,” I dismissed the thought.
“What about Miguel? What’s up with you two?” I glanced at her, and she breathed out.
“I don’t know. He’s been giving me cold shoulders after I kissed him the other time…” She paused and halted the car abruptly again.
“I mean, I didn’t do anything wrong, right? It’s not my fault that I like him. Why would he be cold to me because I kissed him?” She complained, and I just sighed.
“Fuck! I hate making it too obvious that I like him. May… Am I not because enough? Am I that bad?” She looked at me and asked.
“You are beautiful. You should just give it time. I’m sure he will come around,” I assured her, and she sighed.
“I’m frustrated,” She pouted her lips as she stared into space, but I wanted to tell her so badly that I was even more frustrated than her.
“I guess I had too many men chasing me in my past life and I hurt them by turning them down. Who knows, maybe that’s why the man I want doesn’t want me now,” I looked at her and sighed.
“Don’t give up. I’m sure he will come around,” I assured her, and she nodded.
My phone started ringing, and I knitted my eyebrows confusingly when I saw the strange number displayed on the screen.
“Who is this?” I mumbled, hesitating for a few seconds before I swiped the answer button and held the phone to my ear.
“Hello! This is Maybelline. Who am I on to, please?” I said on the phone as soon as I answered the call.
“Hello, Ms. May. My name is Nathan Ford. Let’s meet tomorrow at lunchtime. I have something to discuss with you about your parents,” My eyebrows knitted on their own as the masculine voice sounded from the other end.
“I will send you the address,” The call disconnected almost immediately, and I brought the phone down from my ear.
“Who was that?” I mumbled while staring at the screen of my phone…
