Chapter 52 Jeffrey’s Text Message

Betty was too frustrated to focus on working, so she handed over her work to Jessica and asked for leave to go home.

She reached the Martin family by taxi, walked to the hallway, and took off her shoes. She felt so exhausted that she didn’t want to walk in. So, she sat at the front entrance, lost in thoughts.

Jeffrey… You impress me again…

I thought you couldn’t hurt me more, but you could be crueler than I could have imagined.

Two years ago, you tricked me into sleeping with another man. This time, you even used the money to humiliate me.

When tears almost left her eyes, she got a feeling of weightlessness. When she came to herself, she was carried by Kerwin in his arms.

Startled, Betty tilted her head and Kerwin’s handsome and chiseled face came into her view. “Kerwin? Why… Why are you at home?”

It was noon. Kerwin was usually in the company at this hour.

“I’m back to get some stuff,” Kerwin explained briefly and his eyes fell on Betty’s red eyes. “How about you? Why did you come back so early?”

“I’ve finished today’s job, so I came back…” Betty made up an excuse. Realizing Kerwin was still holding her, she blushed. “Can… Can you put me down? It’s not good to be seen…”

“I’m the only one at home,” Kerwin said faintly and walked to the living room with Betty in his arms. “It’s not good to sit on the ground. Don’t do that anymore.”

Kerwin put Betty down on the couch and asked quietly, “Did you eat lunch?”

Only then did she realize she was so angry and forgot to have lunch. “Have you?”

“Not yet.”

“Wait. I’ll cook for you.” Since Lillian was not at home, Betty decided to cook for Kerwin. However, as soon as she rose to her feet, something came into her mind. She said awkwardly, “Can I cook

spaghetti?”

She knew he was picky about food. Lillian would prepare a table of delicate dishes at every meal. Betty admitted she couldn’t make it.

Kerwin observed the nervous expression on Betty’s face. He felt it was very cute and couldn’t help pursing his lips. “Sure.”

Betty heaved a sigh of relief, put her bag and phone on the coffee table, and walked into the kitchen.

When she was busy cooking spaghetti, her phone vibrated and a text popped out.

Betty was tied up with cooking. Worried that it was a text from her colleagues, she called out to Kerwin, “Kerwin, could you please tell me who the sender is?”

Kerwin was reading finance newspapers. Hearing Betty’s words, he dropped his eyes to the phone on the coffee table.

Betty didn’t set up a screen lock. The text content and sender were shown on the screen. Once Kerwin looked down, he saw a name that annoyed him.

Jeffrey Martin

What was more annoying was the text content.

“Betts, if you really need money to afford your mom’s treatment, I can lend it to you.”

Kerwin tightened his grip on the newspaper.

Betts?

Huh.

Seems they’re on good terms.

Besides, why does Jeffrey know Betty needs money?

Did Betty tell him?

As this thought flashed across his mind, Kerwin felt his anger rise.

Betty would rather tell Jeffrey about her mom’s illness than tell me?

Betty didn’t notice the shift in Kerwin’s mood. She wanted to take off the apron, but the knot was fastened and she couldn’t untie it.

Kerwin raised his head and noticed Betty’s clumsy movement. He rose from the couch, walked

behind her, and took her hand. “Let me do it.”

Feeling Kerwin was standing behind her and his breath on her neck, Betty flushed and withdrew her hand. “Thank you.”

Kerwin didn’t reply, trying to untie the knot. Betty’s previous movement made the knot so tightened that it was hard for Kerwin to undo it.

“Well…” Feeling Kerwin’s breath, Betty was a little uneasy. She could only open her mouth to distract herself. “Who sent the text?”

Kerwin paused for a moment and soon replied, “Jeffrey Martin.”

Betty stiffened.

“Aren’t you curious about what he said?” Seeing that Betty didn’t speak, Jeffrey asked. Têxt © NôvelDrama.Org.

Betty swallowed and gave a wry smile, “Some insulting words, I guess.”

“No.” Kerwin finally undid the knot and tore the apron off Betty. “He said he could lend you money

for your mom’s medical bills.”

Betty widened her eyes and turned around in astonishment. “How did he know…?”

She wanted to ask how Jeffrey knew she needed money to pay her mom’s medical bill, but she paused, as she turned around and met Kerwin’s cold gaze.

Betty was stunned.

“Kerwin, you…” Seeing Kerwin’s reaction, Betty understood Kerwin had known it. Her voice was quivering. “You also know my mom is ill?”

Kerwin bent his head to look at Betty.

There was sweat sticky to her forehead and some strands of hair were on her face. Kerwin couldn’t help but raise his hand and fling her hair behind her ear. He said casually, “Yes.”

Betty’s eyelashes trembled.

She should have thought that. Kerwin was such a powerful man that he could know everything

about her.

Seeing that Betty kept silent, Kerwin frowned. “Are you angry?”

“No.” Betty shook her head tiredly. “You’re so rich. It makes sense that you guard against me.”

Likewise, Jeffrey hid his identity from her deliberately when they were in love. So, it was not surprising that Kerwin would look into her.

Betty’s indifferent tone upset Kerwin.

He never thought about guarding against Betty. He only looked into her background before they got married. This time, he knew her mom’s condition when he looked into things that happened to

Betty two years ago.

“Betty,” Kerwin felt a bit annoyed. When he was about to say something, the sudden ringtone of Betty’s phone interrupted her.

“I need to answer the phone.” Betty didn’t want to talk to Kerwin, so she felt this call came at the right time. She broke free from Kerwin and ran to the living room.

Looking at the caller ID, Betty froze for a moment and hastily answered the phone, “Hi, Dr. Bentley,

I’m almost done with the money. Could you…?”

Before she finished, the doctor’s anxious voice rang out, “Miss White, your mother’s illness worsened suddenly and she needs surgery right now! Could you come over to sign your name and pay the medical bills? Then we can do the surgery ASAP!”
