23 A Wake–Up Call
In the quiet of his office, Alex brooded over the revelations of the day. Turning to Collins, he asked, Did Emma really do so much for me?‘
Collins hesitated, caught off guard by the question. “She managed a lot, sir. Mostly through indirect means, like informing me about your meals and medications.”
Alex’s frustration was evident. “Why wasn’t I told about this?” Content protected by Nôv/el(D)rama.Org.
Collins, feeling unjustly blamed, explained, “I tried, sir. But you always stopped me at the mention of her name.”
Alex fell silent, realizing his own role in overlooking Emma’s efforts.
Later, as Alex and Collins walked past a group of employees, they overheard them discussing Emma. We haven’t seen her lately. She always looked out for the boss,” one employee said wistfully.
Alex listened, a mixture of surprise and regret washing over him. It was clear that Emma’s absence was felt by everyone, not just him.
Collins, sensing the change in Alex, warned the staff against discussing Emma, but their confusion. was palpable. “Why can’t we mention her? They’re still married, aren’t they?”
Collins‘ stern reminder to stay clear of the topic underlined the sensitivity surrounding Emma.
Back in his office, Alex’s thoughts were a whirlwind. He impulsively dialed Emma’s number, only to be directed to voicemail. A text message he attempted was also blocked.
The realization that Emma had moved on, cutting off all communication, hit him hard. He reflected on their marriage, initially a matter of convenience, now a source of profound loss. Alex acknowledged his hubris in taking Emma for granted, only understanding her value in her absence.
As he tried to focus on work, an unexpected call from Bella interrupted his thoughts. Alex braced himself, knowing that the conversation would only bring more complications into his already tumultuous life.
