Chapter 1645: Back in the Day
Selena walked into the building. The environment inside was tranquil, with classical and elegant
Chinese architecture. A pond extended outwards, with a green arch bridge overhead. Various orchids
were planted all around.
As soon as Selena entered, a maid approached her excitedly and elegantly bowed, "Little princess,
Madam has been waiting for you for a long time."
Seeing the familiar place, Selena relaxed a bit. She took a deep breath and stepped onto the bridge
before entering the small building at its end.
The interior of the building was exquisitely decorated in an elegant style with cool tones throughout. A
woman wearing a long blue dress sat in front of an ancient musical instrument with her back to Selena.
Her black hair flowed down like silk behind her back; even from just seeing her back view one could
sense elegance and beauty.
The sound of music filled the room.
Selena stared at that back for a moment, then stepped lightly forward and raised her arms to embrace
the other from behind.
The woman's movements of stroking the piano froze in a flash, and after a few seconds of stagnation,
she turned around and wrapped Selena into her arms in a deadly embrace.
Selena buried in the woman's embrace, feeling the familiar scent, fondly rubbed, softly cried out, "...
mum."
There was a steady stream of warm liquid falling on the slender shoulders, Selena was anxious,
panicked and raised her head to see the face that was pale in complexion, but covered the pouring
face.
Even though Selena had been born beautiful enough, she still looked very young in front of the owner
of this face.
Selena tenderly helped her mother wipe her tears, "Mum, don't cry ... it's alright ..."
Madam Samantha looked at her daughter, who seemed like a completely different person. Tears flowed
endlessly from her beautiful eyes as she spoke in a soft voice, almost choking on her words. "Selena..."
The maid beside them looked worried and said, "Your Highness, Madam's heart condition has
worsened this year. She cannot have any major emotional disturbances..."
Since Selena could remember, her mother had been suffering from a heart condition. She was always
melancholic and rarely allowed anyone to see her except for Selena.
Not even Selena's father was exempt from this rule.
But that didn't mean that Madam Samantha didn't love Selena.
Selena stood up straight and used a handkerchief to wipe away her mother's tears. With a sweet smile
tinged with shyness, she said, "Mom... I have someone I like."
Madam Samantha quickly composed herself and led Selena to sit in front of her. She carefully
examined the innocent face of her daughter before asking incredulously,"Someone you... like?"
Selena leaned against Madam Samantha's shoulder and began telling the story about Osvaldo.
The maids inside quietly left them alone in their own space while they talked for hours about how they
first met until he proposed to marry him which led them back to the empire...
As the light outside gradually dimmed until sunset arrived at last, Selena finally finished speaking.
Madam Samantha listened quietly as she watched the expression on Selena's face change when
talking about Osvaldo - there was an unmistakable joy mixed with shyness that reminded Madam
Samantha of when little Selina had been brought back home with high fever but still insisted on telling
Madam how much she loved her...
A young man had promised to confess his love to her, but she was too tired and needed to sleep for a
while. She asked her mother not to forget to wake her up if the young man was still waiting for her.
If her mother agreed and woke her up, she would forgive herself for accidentally losing contact with her
brother. The young man had promised that he would help find him.
Later on...
Madam Samantha's heart skipped a beat, but she didn't show it on her face. She gently touched
Selena's face and said, "Selena is all grown up now and can start dating."
Selena leaned against Madam Samantha's shoulder and asked with a smile, "Mom, is he good?"
Madam Samantha looked distant as she replied, "Yes, he loves you very much."
She knew that Selena was naturally slow when it came to matters of the heart. If a man could make it
clear that he loved Selena by doing things for her in particular ways then there must be something
special about him.
Selena noticed that something was off with Madam Samantha's expression. She lifted up from the
embrace and asked curiously,"Mom are you not happy?"
Madam Samantha smiled warmly as she stroked Selena's hair,"No dear I am just surprised at how
quickly time passes by... before we know it you are already grown-up enough to have boyfriends..."
Selena lay in Madam Samantha's arms with wide eyes full of joy,"I haven't told dad yet... if he finds out
about Osvaldo..."
Madame Samatha laughed softly as she poked Selana's nose playfully,"You brought your boyfriend
home openly so how could your father not notice?"
It remained only a matter of time before Selana took action against Osvaldo who may not be able
defend himself if push comes shove according to what they both knew about him
Madam Samantha looked at Selena's hopeful eyes and chuckled, feeling a bittersweet sensation she
couldn't quite describe. If it weren't for the unexpected circumstances that led her to cross paths with
men outside of her family, Selena would never have been involved with them.
She gently embraced Selena and said, "Selena is still young. You shouldn't let your heart be swayed so
easily..."
Strictly speaking, Selena had just turned nineteen and had only been legally an adult for a year.
Madam Samantha remembered how Selena died on the battlefield when she was only eighteen... Her
face suddenly turned pale as she forcefully suppressed the lump in her throat. Material © of NôvelDrama.Org.
Selena was still in her mother's embrace and didn't notice anything unusual. She whispered softly,
"But... Osvaldo's parents are really nice to me..."
Madam Samantha laughed and said, "Sweetie, it's not that simple. If you marry him, it means you'll be
with him forever and won't be able to stay by your father or mother's side anymore."
There was a fundamental difference between marriage and dating.
Selena blinked her eyes but didn't say anything more as she snuggled into her mother's arms.
Madam Samantha looked at her daughter's withdrawn expression again before chuckling once more.
She knew that Selena understood the difference between dating someone casually versus marrying
them seriously.
This little rascal was simply worried about Osvaldo being unable to handle their father if he became too
violent towards them - hence why they came here seeking refuge from Stanley who could help protect
them from harm.
Madam Samantha tapped on Selena's forehead playfully before suddenly remembering Stanley again;
the smile on her face froze momentarily as she asked aloud: "Did Stanley come along with you?"
Selene murmured softly: "Mm-hmm…Stanley dropped me off but he should've left already."
Madame Samantha fell silent for a moment while worry flashed across her eyes before saying gently:
"Remember this well my dear child – things are different now than they were before you left home last
year; there have been many changes in our empire."
"Remember, never fully trust anyone, even if they were once the closest person to you," she said.
