Chapter 148

As he spoke, he handed a piece of paper to Mikayla.

Of course, she wouldn’t sign anything recklessly. As she accepted the paper to make them lower their guards, she reached into her pocket to take out her phone to call the police.

Just as she touched her phone, someone grabbed her from behind and dragged her back

“Ah!” Mikayla screamed in fright. She swung her fists and kicked her legs desperately in

resistance.

“Look clearly! It’s me!”

When she heard Jerome’s familiar voice, she stopped struggling. She raised her head and saw Jerome’s face. However, the street lights were dim, so she couldn’t see his expression

clearly.

“Why are you here? Where are they?”

Mikayla turned around with fear, but there was no one else there.

“They ran away,” Jerome said solemnly. “Why did you come to such a quiet place for at

walk?”

She had been extremely nervous earlier, but now that she was relaxed, her legs felt a little

weak. She sat down on the rock next to her.

“I was just strolling around casually. Who knew that I would run into them? Let’s call the

police!”

Mikayla took out her phone, but Jerome said sternly, “No. The police won’t be able to get any evidence even if they come. I’ll send someone to deal with this and investigate clearly.”

“I have evidence!”

She wanted to show him the piece of paper, but she found that her hand was empty.

Jerome saw through her thoughts and explained kindly, “They seemed experienced. They grabbed the paper and ran away as soon as they sensed that something was wrong. They wouldn’t leave you with any evidence.”

Mikayla had been completely focused on how to take out her phone to call the police. So,

she didn’t realize that they had snatched the paper away, and she didn’t notice Jerome approaching either.

He urged, “Let’s go back first.”

She shook her head. “Give me a minute. My legs still feel weak. I need to rest for a while.

He glanced at her with a strange expression and then squatted down in front of her. She couldn’t believe her eyes.

“Get on!” Jerome said impatiently.

Mikayla lay on his back in a daze while Jerome held her legs and walked forward with her on his back.

It reminded her of the times she was carried by Eduard when she was a child. His broad shoulders and warm back had given her an infinite sense of security back then.

As she leaned against Jerome’s back, she noticed that his back was broad and warm too. She could even smell his faint fragrance of cedar.

His steps were steady. Even though Mikayla wasn’t heavy, he gradually became tired after carrying her for such a long distance. But he didn’t put her down or ask her to get off and just kept carrying her.

In her previous life, it would have been nice if Jerome had been this patient with her. He didn’t even need to show so much patience.

If he could have been less unpleasant and less cold toward her and treated her like others, she wouldn’t have been so paranoid and listened to all the provocations to do so many crazy things.

Then, she wouldn’t have been framed, and she wouldn’t have ended up in a mental hospital, suffering from stomach cancer.

“Are you crying?” Jerome’s slightly joking voice interrupted Mikayla’s thoughts. “You were daring enough to bite me and hit me before. Why are you so frightened by them?”

Mikayla didn’t even know when she had started crying.

She wiped her tears and said, “I’m fine now. Put me

dow

Hearing her cold voice, Jerome turned to look at her. “Are you throwing me away now?”
