Chapter Nineteen
The unfamiliar feeling gradually became known. she glanced at Kai who had his eyes closed. Memories of their little encounters flashing before her eyes as she slowly realized that they were possibly never going to interact again.
~
She glanced at the man who had his eyes closed with his head resting against the wall of the carriage again.
She wondered what his thoughts were. She wanted to know if he ever was feeling whatever she was at that moment.
“Perhaps, maybe he did not care?” she asked herself silently and looked down at her fingers.
She needed to remind herself that they both had nothing to do with each other.
“Are you still staring?” Kai asked without opening his eyes.
Her eyes widened and she took her eyes off him quickly and her face in her palms.
Oh, goddess. She thought he was asleep, then how could he have seen her?
She shook her head and stuck her head out of the window. Something she had come to find out she enjoyed while traveling.
Her mother was a lover of nature too. She used to have a garden back in the beta’s manor but as soon as beta Alec married Tabitha, she had the garden demolished and had set up an outdoor dining hall there.
It was one of the most heartbreaking moments for Cassy. The place where she had memories with her mother was gone and there was nothing she could do.
She sniffed. Was she really crying?
“Why tears?” Kai asked, still not opening his eyes.
Cassy quickly wiped her cheeks and tried to sniff silently. “Nothing. I am okay,” she rushed her words, piquing Kai’s interest but he decided to pay no attention.
Why was he suddenly caring?
They suddenly entered a bumpy road and the carriage began to undulate, causing Kai’s eyes to fly open and Cassy took her head inside.
The carriage kept riding on the bumpy road. Cassy tried to sit properly on the chair but she ended up being thrown across the carriage, causing her body to land on Kai’s.
Cassy’s eyes went wide as she stared into Kai’s green ones. The carriage entered another bump again which caused Cassy’s head to push forward and Kai’s hand moved to her waist and their lips met.
Her eyes went wide to its limit. She felt like her eyes were going to pop out. She was kissing Kai!
Cassy pushed him away and tried to move out of his grip on her waist but he was still holding her tight.
“Wh– what are you doing?” he asked, stuttering.
Her hands were moving all over his chest and body over his legs, causing a feeling which he termed wrong to course through him. Was she trying to seduce him?
“I should be asking you why your hand is still around my waist,” she blurted out through gritted teeth.
He cleared his throat and looked away. “You should stay still until the carriage is stable unless you are craving for my lips again but you are looking for other means to–” he drew his head closer but she turned her head.
“I do not understand what you are talking about,” she said dismissively.
The carriage entered a smooth road and Cassy quickly removed his grip from around her waist, her cheeks and neck were beet red.
She sat across from him, thanking the moon goddess for finally leaving his arms but she felt bile rising up to her throat, coming in full force so she hit the carriage indicating that the footman should stop.
She ran out of the carriage as soon as the footman stopped and bent over the side to let out all the content in her stomach.
Kai stood by the side watching and wondered what was wrong with her.
He handled her a bottle containing water which she accepted muttering a few “thank yous”
She rinsed her mouth with it before walking back weakly into the carriage.
“Stop by the closest inn,” Kai ordered the footman quietly before entering the carriage.
He met her already asleep resting her body on her elbow. He sighed and went to sit beside her and brought her body to lay on his.
He was noticing this again. He did every unusual thing with this lady.
It was becoming too much. He could not wait to go back to Isabella.
Thinking about Isabella, he knew she must be angry at him by now. He had not written to her since he left the palace a weak ago and now he was returning without anything for her. He was really done for.
But still he was glad he was back.
Kai took Cassy into the inn as soon as they stopped. He placed her on the bed and covered her with a quilt.
Taking one last glance at her, he moved out of the room.
It was not until afternoon before Cassy woke up feeling better. She sat up and saw that she had a quilt over her and she realized that she was in an inn.
Where was Kai?, she wondered as she stood up.
She came out of the room and walked outside in search of him but still he was nowhere to be found.
“Good day,” she greeted the footman who she found standing outside.
“Your highness,” he tipped his head forward bowing slightly.
“Have you seen the alpha?”
He shook his head. “He has been away for a long time now,” he informed her.
“Perhaps, did he let you know where he would be?” she asked, hoping he would know about his whereabouts.
“I am afraid not, your highness,” he replied and she exhaled through her mouth loudly, running her fingers through her hair.
Did he leave her here?
“Is anything wrong, your highness?”
“No,” she shook her head. “Thanks.”
She returned back to their room and sat down, burying her hand in between her palm. She was exhausted from everything and at this point, she felt like returning back to the palace. She was sure that when she was in the midst of people she had come to be familiar with, she would totally forget everything and her life was going to start all over again.
Cassy stayed in the room till evening but still she had not set her eyes on Kai. Although she knew him for always disappearing, she could not shake off the bad feeling she had. It felt like something bad was about to happen, it felt so real that she could not help but become worried about him
It was cold outside, so she grabbed a coat and pulled it over her dress before moving out of the inn. As she stood outside, she recognised the inn as the one they had checked in last before they arrived at the Blessed Moon pack.
She walked down a little and found a small town filled with few houses and some restaurants. This place was definitely a must stop for travelers.
Cassy sat in one of the open air bars and ordered a glass of beer.
“Thank you,” she smiled at the waitress and took a sip from the beer.
Cassy sat there looking around and sipping her beer until it was dark. She sighed and paid for her drinks before standing up.
With the hope of finding Kai at the inn, she took a trip back to the inn.
“How much is this?” She stopped by a stall selling Jade items.
“20 silver coins, ma’am,” the stall owner replied.
“More!” she heard someone yell from a bar nearby prompting her to look inside.
There was a man laying his head on the table. He seemed spent.
“Sire, you have been drinking since noon and still have not stopped a dime. I am afraid I cannot give you any more drinks until you pay for the ones you have been taking,” the waitress said politely.
Cassy paid for a Jade bangle and returned back to the inn. She took off her clothes and changed into a chemise.
She was about to lay on the bed when she heard a knock on the door.
She opened the door and a man’s body which turned out to be Kai’s collapsed immediately on her, taking her by surprise.
And oh, he reeked so much of alcohol.
“I found him sleeping in the carriage, my lady so I brought him in,” the footman told her and she nodded with a smile.
Again. “Thank you,” she closed the door.
She sighed and put his right arm over her shoulder. Kai was muscled and larger than her, it was a lot of work for her to drag her foot over the short distance from the door to the bed.
She moved away to stand up but he wrapped his arms around her neck and pulled her closer, sniffing in her scent.
He placed his nose in the crook of her neck and took in a deep breath, inhaling her scent.
“Hmm. Sweet,” he hummed.
Cassy, who had been frowning, chuckled. Who would have thought that the almighty Kai was childish when drunk?
Cassy removed this wet shirt and draped a quilt over him before moving to the vacant side of the bed and laid down.
The questions she had been trying to push away rushed into her head as she did.
What made Kai drink till he was so drunk? She knew alphas for having high alcohol tolerance which meant that he had been drinking for so long.
Cassy could only think about a few reasons why he drank but there was one she kept thinking about.
Was he trying to forget a bad memory?
Her thought was interrupted by his body wiggling closer to hers, his hand going to her waist and she quickly pushed him off. Why was he so touchy when drunk?
“And why are you laying on the same bed as him?” her subconscious mind asked mockingly.
Surprisingly, Natalia was quiet and Cassy took it as one that signified pleasure and happiness.
Cassy sighed and glanced at Kai. His looked peaceful despite him furrowing his eyebrows in sleep, his chest heaved up and down as he breathed slowly.
He looked…
No, she was not going to compliment him.
She quickly turned to face the fireplace.
Before she could think of anything else, he hugged her tightly from behind and buried his face in her neck, making her gasp in shock.
She tried to push him off but his body was tight against hers. She huffed and decided to let him.
“What a baby,” she thought with a smile, her hand unconsciously resting on his.
“Hmm,” he hummed and she turned slightly enough to see part of his face.
His lips moved like he wanted to say something and Cassy smiled.
She was going to say this.
He was adorable. This was not a compliment.
She smiled again and closed her eyes.
“Isa– Isa–” he mumbled and Cassy’s eyes flew open.
She did not know how she suddenly had the strength but she pushed him away and got down from the bed.
She grabbed a pillow and blanket and went to lay on the couch, turning away from the bed.
This was no longer an assumption. He had a lover.NôvelDrama.Org (C) content.
Not only was it now confirmed, but she also knew who it was. That’s if what she thinks is correct.
But why did she care?
