Branch One Hundred and Fifty Eight
“What about us? We are married aren’t we?” Xavier asked confused as to where his grandfather was trying to go with the question.
“Oh I see you want to keep your grandfather in the dark don’t you?”
“In the dark?”
Xavier could not be more confused. The words and the sequence of everything his grandfather was saying did not make sense to him.
“I know that you and Jessica have decided to be a real couple,” Dawson says and it finally dawns on Xavier what he had been trying to say. “The kind that can give me great grandchildren” he adds in a whisper.
“Dawson?” Jessica draws out in a warning tone.
“What?” Dawson said casting her a look. “I mean it is what I had always wanted so it’s like a dream come true. Jessica I leave my dreams in your hands please do ensure that they come true” he added again.
Jessica bent her head in embarrassment. She wanted the conversation to be over soon.
“Is the doctor coming soon? We need to get Genevieve settled in so she can run some tests and start treatment immediately” Jessica said trying to change the topic.
Xavier could notice how uncomfortable she was talking about it. Even though he wanted to talk about it he helped her change the topic. They would talk about it when it felt comfortable for her.
“Let me get Ross over the phone so he can have a good talk with Genevieve” Xavier continued.
“Changing the topic aren’t you?” Dawson mumbled as he wheeled himself towards the vast window that overlooked the city.
“The doctor would be here soon,” Xavier said putting his phone back into his pocket.
“Okay then,” Jessica said settling into the sofa in the room. Genevieve did the same while Xavier stood in a corner. Dawson kept watching the city from the window.
The door to the room came open and Ross stepped out. “Mr. Delgado, who do you feel today?” Ross asked walking towards Dawson by the window.
“Ehn, the same as always” Dawson answered. This content provided by N(o)velDrama].[Org.
“Let’s go to the bed so I can examine you,” Ross said wheeling him towards the bed.
“Do we need to step out for the examination?” Jessica asked standing up.
“No need will be real quick about it”
Jessica said back down. She knew quite well that nobody was allowed in the wards during rounds or examinations. The realization that she was in a different social class than them kept hitting her often.
“How does this feel?” Ross asked and Dawson responded. He spent a few more moments on Dawson before shaking his head. His eyes diverted to Xavier and he nodded in acknowledgment. Xavier understood that they needed to see.
“I will take a look at you in my office,” Ross said to Genevieve after Xavier had reminded him about her.
Genevieve and Ross walked away. “I will be back soon” Xavier turned to tell Jessica. She nodded and watched him walk out. She watched the interaction between Ross and Xavier and she prayed earnestly that all was well.
After Ross successfully accessed Genevieve and handed her over to ten nurses for extra tests he invited Xavier in.
“The serious expression on your face tells me that there is something wrong”
“I guess you know me too much for my good then?”
“I have known you since I was a child. You were the one who pronounced my mom dead and a little while after my dad” Xavier said.
Ross was stunned, this was the first time that Xavier was bringing up his parents. Maybe time does really heal wounds. Maybe he was finally growing up. Maybe his wife had an impact on him. He did not know what it could be but he was grateful that it seemed like he was healing.
After the burial of his parents, Ross had suggested therapy for Xavier but he never opened up and never was able to get the help he deserved. He watched him go from a lovely nice young boy to a closed up shell.
“So what is up?”
“Well, I always hate to be the bearer of bad news but I am a doctor and a doctor has to do what a doctor has to do”
“You are stalling,” Xavier said and Ross rubbed his palms together. “It’s about papa isn’t it?” he added.
“The medicine from the clinical testing that was reducing the rate of the deterioration seems to be less effective now. I fear that if we keep feeding them to him, his immune system would get used to it and begin to fight it as though it were a virus”
“What other options do we have?” Xavier asked.
He felt fear overwhelm him but he did not want to show it. He wanted to keep himself together and believe that all was well when in fact all was not.
“We chose this method because that was the safest method for an old man as try chairman. As it stands it is already too late to start any other treatment method since we don’t know how his body might react to it”
“So you are saying that nothing can be done and that I should prepare for the worst right?”
“I hate to be the one to say it but yes, the tablets and injections can not stop the pain again and so we would stop them in his treatments”
“so I should begin my goodbyes? How many months at met do we have together?”
“Two months”
