Chapter 173

I smirked and nodded. “I wanted to familiarize myself with the company’s operations.”

“I understand, but you’re coming way too early. We won’t pay you for your overtime, you know?” Xander joked.

I smiled faintly. “No, I’m contributing my time willingly

“Well, you’re the department head for a reason. If everyone is as hardworking as you, Hueton Corporation will soar to greater heights soon!”

His words sounded ironic to me as he was never a sincere person to begin with. Hence, I didn’t take his

praise seriously.

“Anyway, we can’t rely solely on you to improve the company. I see your effort, Ms. Crown, and I have reported that to our boss. He advised you not to continue like this, in case you overwork yourself and get into trouble. That would be our company’s loss.”

Xander was forbidding me to go to work early. Whatever. I didn’t need to avoid Brandon anymore, anyway. Seeing that he had not delivered any breakfast to my doorstep recently, I believed he understood

my stance now.

“I heard you have a client coming over today. A major one too!” Xander changed the topic.

“Yeah, he’s arriving at 10:00 am. One more hour to go, said with a smile. “I’ll go prepare for the meeting if there’s nothing else, Mr. Roulder.”

“Alright. Good luck, Ms. Crown.” He raised his cup of coffee at me.

After I returned to my office, I perused the document needed for the meeting later. At 9:50 am, I entered

the conference room in advance to check its interior.

Indeed, this upcoming client I was about to meet was vital to the company. If the deal was secured, it would not only compensate for the loss of client resources taken by Chris a few days ago but also boost our performance by another two percentage points.

At 10:00 am sharp, the client arrived. However, my face turned gloomy as soon as I saw the person.

It was Chris.

Since the collaborating company was not Gildon Corporation, I supposed he had disguised himself with his secret company.

He took in my expression and flashed me a gentle smile while extending his hand, “Hello, Ms. Crown.”

I did not shake his hand and merely looked at his arrogant face. My anger at that point was through the roof, but I did not show it. Instead, I looked at him coldly. “Are you here for a collaboration or a fight, Mr.

Gildon?

“A collaboration, of course! What else can it be?” Chris looked mischievous and evil at that moment. There was no sign of the cold and aloof demeanor he used to possess before me.

“Okay. Let’s discuss our proposal.”

I knew he had something up his sleeve, but I still had to proceed with the formalities, Harvo Energy Incorporated, Chris‘ secret company, was no stranger to me as I had read up on their information. Although it was only formed two years ago, it had progressed well and showed a promising future. Exclusive content © by Nô(v)el/Dr/ama.Org.

It seemed like Chris did not put all his effort entirely into Gildon Corporation, and the reason was obvious.

After all, that company was given by his father. No matter what, half of it would belong to Conrad.

Chris cooperated well, agreeing to all of my conditions without hesitation. However, it was precisely that smooth sailing process that rendered me uneasy. There was no way he only came here for a peaceful collaboration.

After our discussion, he was set to sign the document. Expectedly, he led me to the side and said, Maddie, there’s no future for you here as a department head at this small company.”

I stayed silent. I pursed my lips and looked at him.

“As long as you behave, I’ll let you be a boss. Harvo will be yours.” Chris sounded generous.

“So, you’re here for poaching and not for a collaboration, Mr. Gildon,” I mocked.

“I just want you back, Maddie.” He was vulnerable, which was rare.

I stared at his thin lips. They said, the thinner a man’s lips were, the more heartless he was. I agreed with that. “I didn’t want to bring it up again, but you should know by now that we’ll never get back together, Chris,” I restated my stance.

Chris‘ face looked grim. “Look, I’ve done my best for you. What else do you want?”

“I want you… to move on. Let’s put this to an end now My words made it hard for Chris to maintain his smile.

Before he could say anything, Xander came to my side and nodded at Chris. Then, Xander looked at me. Ms. Crown, our boss just notified me that he has objected to this collaboration.”
